Lower Calf Creek Falls

Lower Calf Creek Falls, on a tributary of the Escalante River in central Utah, is a particularly special place for us. We first visited the area in 1995.  It's  somewhat off the beaten path, about 1 ½ hours east of Bryce Canyon. It has no motels, shops or visitor's center. In fact, there's nothing within miles except a very small campground and a funky coffee house. The hike into the falls takes about 2 hours along Calf Creek.

It is a place of inspiring beauty. The surrounding country is desert: barren sandstone for miles in every direction. The waterfall and the canyon leading up to it are truly an oasis. In describing it, we can only come up with words like “Garden of Eden” or “Paradise”.

Sasha had mentioned Calf Creek Falls as the place where she would like to have her ashes scattered. She changed her mind, realizing that it is very far away. According to her wishes, we scattered most of her ashes at Crane Beach in Massachusetts, but we kept some and took them with us this summer. Her ashes now form part of the landscape of this beautiful desert paradise.

There are more pictures of the area, and of the entire trip.
